Albert "Al" Essey, 89, of Greensburg, passed away Monday, June 13, 2016, at his home. He was born May 5, 1927, in Vandergrift, a son of the late Albert and Ada (Solomon) Essey.
Al was a real estate appraiser and broker and insurance agent, having operated the Al Essey Agency in Greensburg. He was a veteran of the Navy and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Greensburg, where he had served as a deacon and elder. Al was an avid golfer and a former member of the Greensburg Country Club. He had also been a member of the Greensburg Elks, the American Legion and was a former handball champion at the Greensburg YMCA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Essey; and a sister, Rosemary Karafinski.
Al is survived by his loving family, his wife, Virginia "June" (Faye) Essey; three children, Jan Sapotichne and husband, Paul, Jill Rippe and husband, Scott, and Jodi Stapleton and husband, Mark; seven grandchildren, Joshua Sapotichne (Shalynn), Sean Sapotichne, Brenna Sapotichne, Matt Rippe, J.P. Rippe, Nathan Stapleton and Jeremy Stapleton; and two great-grandchildren, Xavier and Savella Sapotichne.
Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Al's funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St., Greensburg, with the Rev. Martin R. Ankrum officiating. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church. Entombment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of one's choice.
