Norman N. McWhinney PhD, 85 of Greensburg died on Friday, September 8, 2017 at his home with his wife Michaelene, son Craig, and Pip "the cat " by his side.
He was born January 16, 1932 in Homestead, PA and was the son of the late Russell and Lois Nebo McWhinney.
Norm graduated from Dickinson college in 1953 and received his Masters in 1960 and doctorate degree in 1968 from the University of Pittsburgh. He had proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He later became one of the founding members and chair of the English department at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg campus, and served as an English professor there until his retirement, when he became professor emeritus. He always said, "He never worked a day in his life". Teaching was never a job, it was his passion and that was reflected by the admiration from his students. He was a teacher who made learning fun.
He was predeceased in death, in addition to his parents, by his brother Russell and sister in law Georgia McWhinney PhD.
He is survived by his greatest fan and cheerleader, his wife of 31 years Michaelene. He was her source of love and laughter, and she thanks him for a remarkable marriage.
His sons, Mark (Bo Wen) McWhinney and Craig McWhinney. His step children, Margie (Aaron) Keno, Amy (John) Spears and Natalie (Russ) Harris.
Grandchildren Pax McWhinney, Kyle (Kim) Keno and Elyse Keno. Great grandchildren Mason and Cooper Keno.
A special niece and dear friend Ann Marie Adam, and many nieces and nephew's.
The family would like to thank Kenny and Melinda Hebrank who were a constant source of support. The family would also like to recognize Promise Hospice who treated Norm as their own. And also to Russell Demailley and Natalie Harris Who tended to Norm in his final hours.
A memorial service will be held on October 28 at 2:00 PM in the Campana chapel at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
