Alexander Dermet "Roo" McConnell, 77, died after a short illness following surgery on April 16, 2023, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Alex "Roo" is survived by his brother-in-law, Bill Moore of Panama City, Fla.; adopted sister, Jae Clebourne of Lynchburg, Va.; nephews, Bill, III (Luc) of Nazelles-Negron, France, and Jerale Clebourne of Lynchburg, Va.; great nieces, Kirstin (Sprout) and Xoe (Duck) Clebourne also of Lynchburg, Va., and loving cousins in Greensboro, Pennsylvania, and International students throughout the world that he met and admired. Alex "Roo" was predeceased by his parents, Alexander D. McConnell and Eileen McDermet McConnell of Charlotte, N.C., and sister Judith Kaye Moore of Panama City, Fla.
He graduated from East Mecklinberg High School in Charlotte, N.C., Wake Forest and Rutgers University. Alex was a decorated U.S. Naval Officer, serving in Vietnam, River Division 515 (RIVDIV-515) Patrol Boat.
It is impossible to sum Roo up in a couple of paragraphs- he was so many things to so many people. He was a brother, son, soldier, lover of crossword puzzles, teacher and guide, mentor, devoted friend, good neighbor, gardener, avid walker and outdoorsman. Alex was kind, spiritual, caring, funny and quick-witted.
He loved and was loved.
A graveside service for Alex will be held Friday, June 30, 2023, 2:00 p.m. at St. Clair Cemetery, 944 St. Clair Way, Greensburg.
