Alexander Daniel McConnell, 91, a former resident of Greensburg passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009 in Panama City, Fla. Mr. McConnell was born September 18, 1917 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Alexander and Henrietta Hershey McConnell. Both his father and grandfather, Judge Alexander Daniel McConnell, were noted Westmoreland County attorneys. He was also predeceased by his sister Jody McConnell Williams (Vincent) of Greensburg and David Turney McConnell of Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. McConnell graduated from the University of Michigan in 1939 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and began a career with General Motors Corporation that would last over 40 years-interrupted only by his service in World War II as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps. On November 7, 1942, he married Eileen Virginia McDermet of Jeannette, PA. He left the Army as a major in 1945 and resumed working for General Motors in Pittsburgh with GM's Oldsmobile Division. He and his family then lived in Jacksonville, Fla., followed by Charlotte, NC and Westfield, NJ before his final assignment as a senior level executive at the GM corporate headquarters in Lansing, Mich. After retiring from GM, he and his wife returned to Charlotte, NC. Following his wife's death in 1999, he moved to Panama City. He is survived by his son, Alexander D. McConnell of Lynchburg, Va., his daughter, Judi Moore (William) of Panama City, Fla. and one grandson, William W. Moore, III of Davie, Fla. A graveside service will be held in St. Clair Cemetery on Monday, June 22 at 11:00 am with Rev. Martin Ankrum officating Memorials donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 West 19th Street.
