Anne Thel Driscoll, age 83, of Greensburg, died peacefully with her husband by her side amid prayers and blessings from her family on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
Known as Nana to her grandchildren, she will be remembered for her kindness, her generous spirit, and her devotion to her family, friends, and Catholic faith. Born in Aliquippa, PA, the youngest of four children of the late Henry C. Thel Sr., M.D. and Anne Halpin Thel, she attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy, an all-girls boarding school in Pittsburgh, where she was recognized for her scholarship, leadership, service, and character. As a student, she was admitted to the National Honor Society and crowned queen at the Federation of Catholic High School Students Ball in 1959.
Anne attended Trinity College in Washington D.C., where she continued her academic and social interests and earned her B.A. in 1963. She went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Education and in her first year met a young law student, John Driscoll, on a blind date set up by a family friend. He would become her husband of 58 years and together they would raise five children. They remained inspiring examples of devotion and faith throughout their marriage, even when challenged by John's Navy service in Vietnam, multiple moves, and later rigors of the campaign trail. Anne taught elementary school early in their marriage, but through the life she lived, she continued to teach life's most important lessons long after she left the classroom. She taught her children the importance of trying hard, loving unconditionally, and trusting in God; she taught those who knew her the importance of loyalty, steadfastness, and good humor; even strangers would experience warmth and kindness. She exemplified the value of leading a humble, purposeful life devoted to the teachings of her church and the Blessed Mother.
Anne was a very busy mother, a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Church and logged more than 2500 hours as a volunteer at Excela’s Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg. She had a special fondness for bridge and for more than 45 years loved her Thursday lunches with “the girls.” She took immense pride in her grandchildren, traveling far and wide to see them even when her health began to decline. She showed them the value of quiet confidence, humility, and grit.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John J. Driscoll, and her five children, Martha von Uckermann (Alexander), John, Jr., Captain, USN, Retired (Lynne), Michael, Henry Patrick, M.D., and Mary Kathryn, and seven grandchildren, Michael Jr., Molly, Alexander, Quinn, Margaret, Frances, and William. She is also survived by her sister, Yvonne T. Driscoll, M.D., and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved. Anne was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Anne; and her sister, Mary Margaret Watkins, and brother, Dr. Henry C. Thel, Jr., M.D.
