Bernard Peterson

Bernard J. Peterson, 80, of Ligonier, passed away, Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in Excela Latrobe Hospital. He was born April 4, 1935 in Greensburg a son of the late Nils and Mary (Chislock) Peterson.

Bernie was an employee of the US Postal Service from which he retired. He was a graduate of St. Vincent College with a degree in business administration where he was co-captain and named All American for the St. Vincent basketball team. He was inducted into the Westmoreland County Sports Hall of Fame and had been interviewed as a potential team member for the Detroit Pistons. He also played in the Maurice Stokes benefit basketball game where he was selected as the MVP. Bernie loved all sports and was an avid golfer. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ligonier and a member of the Latrobe Elks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Ann (Makowski) Peterson; a sister Karen Smith and husband Joseph of Butler; a brother, Paul Peterson and wife Mona of Ann Arbor, MI and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews whom he was very fond of.

Family and friends will be received on Friday from 4 -7 pm in the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, INC. 524 N. Main St. Greensburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 am in Holy Trinity Church with Rev. John M. Foriska as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.
