Betty Jane Hansen passed away peacefully on January 29, 2021 at the age of 94. She lost the love of her life, Chadwick Clarke Hansen, in 2011. They met in high school in Scarsdale, New York, and married after his return from the Navy in 1946. They had a magical life together living in the various cities his career as a university professor took them to: Minneapolis, State College, Iowa City, Chicago and even a stint in Graz, Austria. They traveled together, enjoyed the opera, symphony, jazz, dancing, museums and were both avid readers. They were rarely seen together without being hand in hand.
Betty was a fun-loving, elegant woman who was a phenomenal mother and role model to her four beloved daughters, and who adored their husbands and children as her own: Cynthia Jane Guntharp and Matthew (Lancaster, PA); Judith Walker O’Toole and Kevin (Greensburg) and daughters Sarah and Rachel with son-in-law Ryan Marling; Kirsten Shaw Janowicz and Gary (Midland, MI) and daughter Micaela Middleton and her father David; and Katherine Clarke Ashby and John (Iowa City, IA) and son John Chad with his wife Sarah and their children Otto and Eliza.
Betty moved to Greensburg in 2014 and enjoyed volunteering at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art where her dear friend and “fifth daughter,” Barbara Jones is Chief Curator.
Donations in her memory can be made to The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 N. Main Street, Greensburg, PA 15601 or Redstone Hospice Program,
