Charles Dozois

Charles Louis Dozois, 88, of Greensburg, died Sunday afternoon, January 20, 2013 at Hempfield Manor Nursing Home, where he had been undergoing physical therapy resulting from a recent hospital stay. He was born October 16, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of the late Harold and Bertha Holtz Dozois.

Prior to his retirement in 1989, he was a contracts and procurement specialist for the Bureau of Mines (US Department of Interior) in Washington, D.C. In that capacity, he oversaw procurement functions in the Bureau's offices located in Denver and Pittsburgh, as well as in Washington. He began his career in Tulsa, Oklahoma after graduating from Oklahoma University with a degree in engineering. When he was 18, he entered the service as a sailor, and spent two semesters at Iowa State University before the Navy transferred him to OU to complete his officer training. After the war, he returned to OU to complete his degree. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he joined the Naval Reserves, and served in the rank of Lieutenant Commander up until his retirement.

In 1989 he moved to Greensburg. While here, he joined Kiwanis, where he served as the organization's president for one term and as a District Governor. He volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels for many years. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Board and in other volunteer capacities. In addition to his volunteer activities, Charles was an avid golfer, a pursuit he enjoyed for most of his life.

Charles is survived by his wife of almost ten years, Phyllis Scott Dozois; four children, Dennis (Carolyn) of Yukon, OK, Sandra (Chuck) of Tulsa,OK, Kathy of Damascus, MD and Peggy of Olney, MD; a sister, Helen Danielson of Chicago; as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8 pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home, (an authorized remembrance provider) 524 North Main Street Greensburg.

Services will be held at 11am on Wednesday at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),Greensburg with Dr. Renny Domske officiating. Military honors following the service will be provided by VFW Post 33 of Greensburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions, if desired, be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 134 Mathews Street, Greensburg, PA 15601.
