Proud Korean War Veteran and G.C. Murphy Company Executive Passes

Clair Arthur McElhinny, 84, of Mooresville, NC and formerly of Greensburg, PA, died peacefully on Friday, January 4th, 2013, at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. He was born to the late Clair J. and Dorothy Reese McElhinny on August 3, 1928 in McKeesport, PA. He was a 1946 graduate of St. Peters Catholic High School in McKeesport.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn G. McElhinny of Mooresville, NC; a daughter, Jill K. Mondo and her husband, Craig, of Mooresville, NC; two wonderful grandsons, Jonny and Matthew Mondo; a brother in law, Dr. Raymond B. Gavert and his wife, Cindy, of Alexandria, VA; two sister in laws, Onnolee Samuelson and her fiancAC., Jim Murphy, and Darlene McIntyre and her husband, Brian, of Jamestown, NY; a nephew, David P. Wright and his wife, Brenda of Greensburg, PA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Vern C. McElhinnyWright; and a brother, Carl J. McElhinny.

Clair retired from the G.C. Murphy Company in McKeesport, PA as Vice President of Sales, after 39 years of service.

Clair was a Korean War Veteran and served with the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, 279th Regimental Combat Team. He attained the rank of Captain. He was Active Duty from 1951 - 1954 and Reserve from 1954-1963.

Clair was an active board member and officer of the G.C. Murphy Company Foundation; a member of the Jamestown Elks Lodge #263, America Legion #981, Westmorland Historical Society, Westmoreland Archaeology Society, Elizabeth Township Historical Society and charter member of the W.W. II Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. He volunteered over 3500 hours at Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg, PA and also provided valuable information for a book about the G.C. Murphy Company called "For the Love of Murphy's."

His interests included family genealogy, traveling, spending time with his grandsons and volunteering.

Friends will be received at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street in Greensburg on Friday, January 11th from 9:00am to 11:00am with a Prayer Service immediately following.
