Colvin "Cal" E. Carnes, 94, of Greensburg , formerly of Banning, Pa. , passed peacefully into heaven Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Westmoreland Manor, Greensburg . He was born June 28, 1916, in New Derry, the son of the late David and Sadie Carns. He is survived by his daughters, Ruth (Lonnie) Stangroom and Charlotte (Eugene) Kolbosky; grandchildren, James (Jennifer) Stangroom, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Stangroom, Cindy Kolbosky Hertzog, John (Mary Jo) Stangroom and Sandy (Robert) Wright; great-grandchildren, Jonathan (Chrystie) Hertzog, Joshua (Melissa) Hertzog, Hope, Kelsea, Christian, Travis, Sara and Daniel Stangroom, Justin Kistler, Christie (Mark) Applegate and Ashley (Jon) Alley; and great-great-grandchildren, Cassidy Hertzog and Aiden Alley. Cal told many stories of starting to work at the Banning Mine at just 18 years of age and being called the "boy at the angle station" which, at that time, carried slate in buckets across the Youghiogheny River . He retired from Walworth Valve in Greensburg . He loved God, his family and music and enjoyed playing the fiddle, banjo and harmonica. He was ready with his toolbox to help anyone who needed it. He always said he could fix anything but a broken heart. He was a devout Christian and has left that legacy with the family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beatrice. He is also survived by his two sisters, Esther Fisher, of California , and Grace Longwill, of Georgia ; and many nephews and nieces. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St. , Greensburg , where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
