David G. Assard, 82, of Greensburg, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Bristol, Conn., a son of the late George and Evalyn (Whalley) Assard. David earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut with graduate engineering work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and business/finance studies at the Wharton School of Business. David held a commission in the Navy and was a Naval aviator during and following the Korean War and spent 13 years on active and reserve duty. A retired businessman, he experienced more than 40 years of increasingly responsible leadership positions in aviation and industrial manufacturing industries. David spent six years in design/development engineering before becoming manager of marine marketing at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. He then became president of Penske Power Systems of Maineville, Ohio. The next 23 years were spent leading several organizations including being the president and CEO of Textron Lycoming of Stratford, Conn., and president and COO of Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. David retired as president and CEO of Elliot Co. in Jeannette in September of 2002. He was part owner, chairman and CEO of a new startup business, Precision Governors, in Rockford, Ill., supplying electronic fuel injectors. He was on the Board of Directors of Clean Energy Systems of Rancho Cordova, Calif., a firm pursuing the use of rocket power to generate zero emissions electric power. David was on the boards of many local associations including, Pittsburgh's Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, University of Pittsburgh Greensburg Advisors, Seton Hill University, Westmoreland County Community College, Westmoreland Cultural Trust and president of the Westmoreland Society of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, white water canoeing, hiking and bicycling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, William Tedford. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Assard; his daughters, Evalyn A. McMahon (Dennis P.), of Wethersfield, Conn., Annemarie Langhan, of Sturbridge, Mass.; sons, Dan Assard (Skiyea Nieves), of East Hartford, and Donald Assard (Janet), of Bolton, Conn.; grandchildren, Jeffrey D. Tedford, Daniel P. Tedford, Katherine L. Tedford, Jenne Sellers (Corey) and Alyssa Assard; brother, Gerald Assard (Chris), of Bethlehem, Conn.; and sister, Pam Malley (Mike), of Plymouth, Conn. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, in St. Michael's Orthodox Church, 1182 Ashland St., Greensburg, PA 15601. Memorial prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the Divine Liturgy to be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Orthodox Church, with Archpriest John Nosal as celebrant.
