David H. Samuel, 85, of Unity Township, died October 13, 2011, at Latrobe Hospital. Born June 6, 1926, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Claude H. and Sophia (Alterman) Samuel. David was a resident of Unity Township for the past 46 years. A graduate of the Southmont Public Schools (Johnstown), he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In 1950, he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A journalist for most of his working career, he served as Sports Editor of the Coatesville Daily Record following his graduation from Penn; account executive for Adelphia Associates public relations firm; Sports Information Director for Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University); was an advertising editor for Pennsylvania Electric Company in Johnstown, and West Penn Power in Greensburg; was partner in Mr. Big Limited clothing for men; owner of Harvey's of Greensburg; was an insurance agent for multiple companies, most recently with AFLAC; and was Sports information Director at Saint Vincent College.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Theresa (Fornario) Samuel; his son, David C. Samuel and wife Karla Thomas of Hempfield Township; his daughter, Susan E. Gill and husband, Thomas M. Gill of Bloomsburg; his grandchildren, Kevin Thomas Samuel and Tessa Skye Gill; and predeceased by his sister, Rhoda S. Friedman of Greensburg.
An active member of Philanthropy Lodge #225, F.&A.M. where he was twice Worshipful Master, David was active in the Republican Party, serving as township chairman for both Hempfield and Unity Townships, and Judge of Elections for a number of years in the Dennison District.
He was past president of Dryridge Volunteer Fire Department, and served as a member of the company's fire police. He also served as Westmoreland County Heart Fund chairman. With a lifetime interest in athletics, he had been a registered P.I.A.A. official, umpired Little League baseball, and was a devoted lifelong fan of Penn State Nittany Lions. Family and friends will be received Sunday from 5-8pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME (an authorized remembrance provider) 524 North Main Street, Greensburg, PA. A masonic service will be held by members of the Philanthropy Lodge #225, F.&A.M. Sunday evening at 7:30pm at the funeral home.
