Della M. Lipps, 92 of Blairsville formerly of Scottdale passed away, December 12, 2015 at Nature Park Commons, Greensburg.
She was born December 8, 1923 in Ligonier, PA daughter of Charles R. and Lula (Roadman) Pritts. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Carl W. Lipps in 2002 and beloved grandson, Matthew Highberger in 1982.
She was a member Calvin United Presbyterian Church of Scottdale. She graduated from Ligonier High School in 1941 and always wanted to go to college to be a math instructor. World War II began one day before her 18th birthday in 1941 and her plans came to an end.
She was a great baker especially of cookies and pies and enjoyed cooking and entertaining for her whole family. She was a wonderful seamstress making most of her drapes, daughter's wardrobes, Halloween costumes, prom dresses, sofa slip covers and suits for her husband and even made her oldest daughter's wedding dress and veil. But her very favorite role was that of Gram to her eight grandchildren.
She is survived by her two daughters, JoAnne Highberger (Bruce) of Blairsville and Carla Mator (Rick) of Ohio. Also seven grandchildren, Stephanie Thompson (Jim), Heather Bethune, Jarrod Highberger (Juliet) all of Pittsburgh, Laurel Raasch (Scott) of Norwalk, CT, Adam Highberger (Christina) of Blairsville, Melanie Tolchin (Brett) and Ashley Schott (Tyler) of Pittsburgh. Also surviving her are four great grandchildren, Isabelle Tolchin, Bailey and Emma Thompson, and Erika Bethune. She is also survived by a much loved sister-in-law Julia Lipps and much loved nephew, John D. Lipps and niece Susan Daugherty of Pittsburgh, PA.
Her family would like to say thank you to all the staff at Nature Park Commons for their kind and compassionate care toward Della since July 2015 and also ViaQuest nurse Betty and aide Bonnie for making such an effort to make Della comfortable.
Per Della's wishes there will be no public visitation and services will be private. Family requests memorial donations be made to the Life Skills Class of Blairsville Senior High School in memory of Matthew Highberger 100 School Lane, Blairsville, PA 15717
