Dolores Platos

July 4, 1930 — December 24, 2015

Dolores Jean Platos, 85, passed away the night of December 24, 2015, at Arden Courts in Monroeville. She was a loving, devoted, caring and compassionate woman who touched countless lives during her life's journey. She was born on July 4, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up in Evansville, Indiana.

Upon her high school graduation, she received a full scholarship to Wellborn Memorial Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. While in nursing school, she met the man with whom she would spend the next 62 years, Albert "Al" Platos. Serving in the US Army as a Military Police Officer, he was "smitten" with her beautiful blue eyes and red curly hair. In order to catch her attention, he wrote her a ticket, charging her with "unlawful beauty". They wed on March 21, 1952. She left her hometown and moved to Brownsville where they started their life together. After a few years, they lived in Jeannette before moving to their permanent home in Greensburg.

They raised five children, Kent (Karen) Platos, of Greensburg; Scott (Kathleen) Platos, of Ligonier; Kim Platos of Greensburg; Jeannie (Van) Johnson, of Woodbridge, VA; and Stacey (Michael) Driscoll, of Charlotte, NC. They had eight special grandchildren, Nicole Platos (Oscar Blazquez), of Valladolid, Spain; Michelle (Jeff) Byrd, of Greensburg; Stephen (Angie) Platos, of Export; Renee Johnson, of Woodbridge, VA, Michael Johnson, of Woodbridge, VA; and Devin, McKenna and Kelsey Driscoll, of Charlotte, NC. In addition, her life was graced with great grandchildren, Makenzi and Tyler Byrd; Madison Platos; and Olivia and Martina Blazquez Platos. Also surviving are sister Charlene (Homer) Christensen, of Arlington, VA; sister in law Shirley Foerster, of Evansville, IN; sister in law Loretta Platos, of Brownsville; and several loved nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Florence (Hunter) Foerster; husband Al; siblings Robert (Elsie); Winston; Marion (Lawrence) Oakley; brother in law John Platos and several special friends.

In addition to her devotion to her husband and children, she worked as a Registered Nurse. She worked countless overnights at Westmoreland Hospital in the Labor and Delivery Department. She also worked as a Visiting Nurse, reaching persons with medical needs in their homes. Even with the demands of raising a family, supporting her husband and working in her profession, she gave in multiple ways in her community. She volunteered for The Red Cross, the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary, the Girl Scouts, the Literacy Council, and in several roles in her church. She spent years as an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Greensburg, singing in the choir for most of those years. One of her greatest passions in life was for traveling. She accomplished her goal of visiting all 50 states.

Jean spent the last years of her life in the life stealing throes of Dementia. Even up to her last days, the disease did not rob her of her sense of humor, a trait shared by her entire family. All are now comforted knowing she rests in her faith and she has reunited with loved ones. The family offers endless gratitude to Arden Courts of Monroeville for the love, respect and care provided. In addition, acknowledgement is given to Heartland Hospice for care during her final days.

Friends and family will be received Sunday, January 3 from noon to 2pm at KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home 524 N. Main Street, Greensburg.

Services will be held on Monday, January 4 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church 15 E. Second Street, Greensburg (Everyone please go directly to the church).
