Donald F. Kauffman

August 23, 1930 — March 26, 2025

Donald Francis “Don” Kauffman, of Greensburg, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Redstone Highlands-Greensburg. He was born on August 23, 1930, at home, in Hunker, PA., the eldest son of Marion Espy Kauffman and Eula Maybelle (Albright) Kauffman Cox. He was raised in Mendon and New Stanton.

Following graduation from South Huntingdon High School in 1948, Don proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged in 1954. While in the Navy, he met and married his wife, Norma Jean (Lynch) Kauffman. They settled in Irwin while he attended college at Penn State McKeesport, earning an associate degree in engineering in 1956. He then began his career at Elliott Company, in Jeanette, and relocated his now growing family to the Greensburg area. During his career at Elliott, he held many positions with his longest tenure being a Project Manager where he had the opportunity to travel all over the world. He retired from Elliott in 2001.

He was active in community events throughout the course of his life. He coached baseball for the Maxwell School baseball team; he served as President of the Association for Retarded Citizens – Westmoreland County (now ARC), was a member of the Elliott Company Retirees group, and was an avid golfer. He loved football having been selected as an All-Westmoreland County selection in 1947. He and his wife, along with son Ronnie, travelled extensively to watch their other two sons play high school and college football. He rarely missed watching a Steelers or Pitt football game on TV. He was continually active in his church, St. Matthias Lutheran Church, serving many years on the church leadership council, serving as an usher and greeter, as well as chairing the property committee. His greatest accomplishment was the building of a group home for Ronnie. He acquired the land, hired the architect, selected the builder, and supervised the construction. Following completion, he was always at the house – inspecting and maintaining it.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob, and his son, Ronnie. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Norma Jean, two sons, Rick (Sharon) of Houston, TX., and Jim (Susanne) of Phoenix, MD. Also surviving are three grandchildren – Bennett Kauffman of New York City, Rick Kauffman (Holly) of Apollo and Michelle-Ashley Amatangelo (David) of North Charleston, SC. He was also loved by and will be missed by great-grandchildren – Gabriel Amatangelo and Maddux Amatangelo, both of North Charleston, Heidi Plazio of Apollo; nephews Dave (Pam) Kauffman of Ruffsdale, Bob (Josie) Kauffman, also of Ruffsdale and their daughter Elaina; niece Susan Lynch of Boston and Eric (Rebecca) Lynch of New Jersy and numerous cousins and relatives.
