Dorothy "Dottie" Kingan Garland, 90, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013.
Dottie was born March 17, 1923, in Connellsville, the daughter of Charles Lynn and Helen Viola Kingan.
Dottie is survived by her six children, daughters, Summer (Duffy) Friedlander, Colleen (David) Robinson and Holly (Ken Ficerai) Garland; and sons, Gregory (Mardi) Garland, Timothy Garland and Robert Garland; 13 grandchildren, Gregory and Stephen Garland, Ryan and Max Friedlander, Gabriella, Caleb and Noah Ficerai-Garland, Oliver, Dominick, Luke and Kipp Robinson, Robert and Thomas Garland; and her brother, Lynn Earl Kingan, of Rome, Italy. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert Wm. Garland; her parents; and her brother, Charles Melvin Kingan and her sister, Lydia Carmen (Jack) Watson.
Dottie graduated from Greensburg Salem High School and the Westmoreland Hospital School of Nursing where she obtained her registered nurse degree. Dottie served as a nurse during World War II, taking care of wounded soldiers. Prior to obtaining her school nursing certification from the University of Pittsburgh, Dottie also worked as a nurse on the Pennsylvania Railroad. For most of her career, Dottie was a nurse for Westmoreland Hospital on the obstetrics floor. She served as a Republican State Committee Woman from 1982 through 1986 and was a life-long member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg. Throughout her life and her career, Dottie was known as a woman who loved God, her family and nursing. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed sewing, dancing and playing cards. She also loved family gatherings for the holidays, Sunday picnics and dinners and any opportunity to have her family together around her. Her greatest joy was watching her children and grandchildren play badminton, croquet, kick ball, wiffle ball and hide-and-seek in the backyard of the home she and Bob built in Windihill as a young couple.
There will be no public viewing. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 300 N. Main St., Greensburg.
Interment will follow at Twin Valley Mausoleum in Delmont.
