Dorothy J. Miller, 86, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Carrol's Rest Home in Bedford. She was born May 10, 1924 in South Greensburg, a daughter of the late Catherine Rapp Bard and Daniel Bard. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Phillips Croushore, Naomi Phillips Charlton and Marie Bard Wible, her brother John Bard, niece Betty Lou Charlton Miller, and nephews Charles Croushore and Lonnie Shoaf. She is survived by her sister Ruth Bard Shoaf, daughters Judy Miller of Arlington Virginia, and Tracy Miller Orlinsky of Lake Ridge Virginia, her son Robert Miller of Ebensburg, five granddaughters, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She enjoyed a special relationship with her niece, Cherie Millward and her nephew, Ken Shoaf. She graduated valedictorian of her South Greensburg High School class in 1942. She worked in the office at Walworth, then briefly at Sears Roebuck before becoming a full time mother. She returned to work for Sears in the accounting office when her children were older, and worked for 21 years before retiring February 28, 1991. She volunteered with Literacy Volunteers of America, becoming certified in June of 1982. In addition, she was active in the local Sears retirees association, and First Trinity United Church of Christ in Youngwood, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Dorothy loved to bake and share it with others. She also shared her love of music, playing hymns and polkas on the piano at family gatherings. She loved chocolate and the Pittsburgh Steelers, was an avid reader, and always enjoyed dinner out with friends and family.
Family and friends will be received at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 N. Main St. Greensburg on Friday from 4 to 6 pm and on Saturday from 10 to 12 with a funeral service to be conducted at noon in the funeral home followed by a graveside service in the Westmoreland Co memorial Park.
