Dorothy Schadel Sell of Greensburg died March 8, 2018 just prior to her 95th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty years, Frederick Robert “Bob” Sell, her brother Harry M. Schadel, Jr. and her sister Gloria S. Southam, and one of her four sons, Craig M. Sell. She is survived by sons Frederick R. Sell, Jr. and his wife Arleen Boyle Sell, Curtis J. Sell, and Jeffrey S. Sell and wife Sally Smith Sell. Her extended family includes 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and daughters-in-law, Peggy Mills Qualls, and Robin Sell.
Dorothy grew up in Bridgeville, PA. During WWII she attended Carnegie Tech (now CMU) earning a bachelor’s degree and specializing in dietary science. Throughout her life she applied her dietary knowledge and skills in various work and volunteer roles including serving 16 years as a part-time dietician at Westmoreland Hospital, organizing many church and community dinners, and providing delicious “well balanced” meals for her family.
Dorothy and Bob were very involved “bringing up” their sons, providing volunteer support for church, Scouting, school, and sports activities, vacationing at Lake Chautauqua, and taking family camping trips to “see” the country.
Throughout her life Dorothy thrived by putting her faith into action, helping others, often as a behind- the-scenes “doer”. She was active in both body and mind. Dorothy swam over a mile three times a week well into her 80s. She was also an excellent seamstress, a voracious reader, and vigorous walker who enjoyed the outdoors.
She felt particularly blessed by her large extended family, and the many friendships she shared with Beech Hills and Redstone Highlands neighbors, and members of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, College Club and many other groups. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as one who loved life, and lived fully.
Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main Street, Greensburg on Monday 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St. Greensburg with Rev. Martin Ankrum officiating. (For those attending the service, please go directly to the church.) Entombment will be at Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. The family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St. Greensburg, PA 15601 or one’s charity of choice.
