Edgar (Jazz) St. Clair Smith, 90, a resident of South Greensburg passed away peacefully at Westmoreland Manor on July 24, 2013.
He was born April 2, 1923 in Latrobe, the son of the late Greta and C. Ellis Smith. He was a mould maker machinist at Overmyer Mould Company until a back condition forced his retirement.
He served in the U S Navy in WW II as a gunners mate, he was a long-standing member of the South Greensburg Methodist Church serving in the choir and on numerous church committees prior to his deteriorating health. He was a Mason serving as Past Master of his Lodge and a Shriner and a member of the American Legion.
Besides his parents, Edgar was preceded in death by brothers William and Richard and a sister, Louisa Yandrick.
He is survived by the love of his life, Ruth Shrader Smith to whom he was married for 69 years. He is also survived by a son, Dr. Jack D. Smith and wife Georgia M. Smith of Greensburg and a daughter, Dr. Jill Forster and husband Dr. Scott Forster of Alameda, California; grandchildren, Cameron Smith Foos and husband David Foos of Fort Myers, FL and Ben and Matthew Forster of Alameda, CA; two great-grandchildren, Remy and Davis Foos, a sister Peggy Byers, a special sister-in-law Betty and husband William (Apple) McIlvaine, numerous nieces and nephews especially niece Wendy McIlvaine who always brought a smile to his face.
He believed in hard work but loved to have fun and instilled that ethic and virtue in his children. He was proud of the fact that both children became physicians and use their education to serve others. Other than spending time with his family, his greatest joys were swimming in his pool, eating ice cream, doing projects at his house and spending his winters in Myrtle Beach.
His family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Larry Plundo and the wonderful caring staff at Westmoreland Manor especially all on 3B who he adored also additional thanks to Brenda Flanigan, caregiver and friend.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street Greensburg where services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am.
Interment will follow in the Hillview Cemetery, Greensburg.
