Evelyn Jean Makarsky, 77, of Greensburg, died, Monday, February 10, 2025, in her home. She was born March 25, 1947, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Paul E. McDowell and Lila K. Mathews McDowell. Evelyn was a member of St. Matthias Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greensburg and she attended the First United Methodist Church, Greensburg. She was hired in 1969 as a schoolteacher for the Hempfield Area School District. Evelyn taught first grade for 12 years at Fort Allen Elementary before moving on to Maxell Elementary for 22 years to teach second and third grade. After retiring in 2004, she became a substitute schoolteacher at Maxwell Elementary until 2015. During retirement from teaching, Evelyn worked at Joseph Thomas Flower shop delivering flowers and Westmoreland Hospital gift shop, where she also volunteered at the front desk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Michael A. Makarsky and her second husband, Melvin Cooley; nephew, Richard Snell; and her brother-in-law, Earl Snell. Evelyn is survived by her son, Mason Paul Makarsky (Leah); her significant other, Kerry Thompson; her granddaughters, Makayla Patlyn and Macie Elila Makarsky; 2 sisters, Kathryn Snell and Paula Striker; brother, Edward McDowell (Lucy); also, many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received on Saturday, February 15th from 2 pm until the hour of service at 4 pm at Kepple-Graft Funeral, 524 North Main Street, Greensburg. Entombment will be private.
