Dr. George F. Chambers, 97, of Greensburg died on July 24, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Chambers (1960) and Edith Ferguson Chambers (1991); his first wife, Joan (1994); his second wife, Marion (2013); and his daughter, Bonnie Heather Chambers (2017). Surviving are his son, George Lee Chambers of Santa Clarita, California, daughter Susan Chambers Johnson and son-in-law, James K. Johnson of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and grandson, Benjamin Chambers Johnson of Hartford, Wisconsin. A native of Buffalo, New York, Dr. Chambers received a B.S. in chemistry, an M.B.A., and a PhD in economics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. During the 1950s, he was Assistant Operations Officer and pilot for the Buffalo Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. In 1958, He was appointed Director of Development for the University at Buffalo and in 1962 was appointed Associate Professor and Director of Development for the University of Pittsburgh. In 1965, he was named President of Nassau Community College on Long Island. In 1980, he became Professor of Economics and President of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, serving over 16 years and retiring as President Emeritus in 1997. Mourners may express condolences to the family at a visitation from 6:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, July 30, at Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 Main Street, Greensburg. A funeral will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main Street, Greensburg at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in East Aurora, New York, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2. Memorials may be sent to the Westmoreland County Food Bank.
