George Winslow Detar Jr., 90 of Greensburg, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at his home.
He was born April 13, 1920 in Greensburg, a Son of the late George W. Sr. and Josephine (Foltz) Detar.
George served during WW II as a bombardier on a crew of a B24, flying missions in the South Pacific in 1945 and has attended several crew reunions.
George was a proud graduate of Juniata College in Huntingdon and had served for many years as the Class Fund Agent convincing his classmates to donate thousands of dollars to the college.
He was a retired painting and wallpaper contractor working for many homes and business's in the area.
Answering his call of Jesus Christ, he served in churches in many ways: He currently is a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greensburg where he and his wife served together for nine years on the Evangelism Committee and as coaches for the youth in Bible Bowl Competition. He was a former member of the Greensburg Church of the Brethren, where he served as chair of building committee during construction of current building at the corner of Mace and Stanton.
As an ordained minister, he served as pastor to many churches, most notably, ten years at Bovard Union Church and six years at Wooddale Church of the Brethren.
George is Known for his love of the Pittsburgh sports teams, Christmas Trees and ice cream.
In addition to his Parents he was preceded in death by four brothers John, C. James, David and Gerald Detar and a sister L. Joan .
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Laura (Scott) Detar and their children, Susan Dziuk and husband Walter of Philadelphia, Diane Scott and husband David of Newark, Delaware, Carol Jones and husband Randy of Conneaut, Ohio, and George W. Detar III and wife Sharon of Laughlintown, Nine Grandchildren, Adina Bingham, Laurel Books, Amy Haas ,Megan Fitzwater, Simon, Kellen and Bayley Detar, and Ian and Emily Jones, a Great-Granddaughter, Madeleine Bingham, a Brother, Donald Detar of Greensburg, and two Sisters, Emma Jean Miller of Irwin and Doris Faust and Husband Warren of McKeesport.
Family and friends will be received at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main St., Greensburg, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm.
A funeral service will be held on Friday in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 246 So. Main Street Greensburg at 10:30 am with Pastor Marleen Griffith-Stull officiating.
Private interment will be in the Westmoreland Co. Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland County food bank, 100 Devonshire Drive, Delmont, PA 15626-1607 in George's memory.
