George H. Rutter Sr., 96, of Greensburg, died Thursday, March 26, 2015, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.
He was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Greensburg, a son of the late George H. Rutter and Bessie Page Rutter Schrader.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensburg. Prior to retirement, he worked as a conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. During World War II, George served with the Army Airborne Engineers. George loved making furniture in his workshop and he devoted a lot of his time helping others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, William Schrader; a brother, the Rev. Kenneth P. Rutter, D.D.; two half brothers, Jay and Wilbur Schrader; and a stepsister, Jessie Gibson.
George is survived by his wife, Dorothy Marie Hawkins Rutter; two sons, George H. Rutter Jr. (Barbara), of Greensburg, and Gary A. Rutter (Judy), of Latrobe; granddaughters, Christine Hawkins (Brooke), of Overland Park, Kan., and P.J. Barton (Thomas), of Virginia Beach, Va.; three great-grandsons, Will, Tommy and Ben; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.
