Helen Mckelvey

August 17, 1930 — February 4, 2011

Helen Barbour McKelvey, 80, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully in the early morning of February 4, 2011. She was born to the late Dana and Ruth Barbour of Greensburg on August 17, 1930, and was the youngest of three children. She graduated from the Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburgh (now Chatham University) in 1952 and worked as an elementary school teacher in King of Prussia, PA supporting her husband as he attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She also worked as a pre-school teacher in Greensburg, retiring after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1980. Helen was a cherished advisor to her children and extended family, and was always eager to offer her love, support and understanding. She enjoyed life and had a great gift for keeping things simple and positive. Helen's deftness at cards and her ability to laugh herself to tears will never be forgotten. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John (Jack) Barbour of Greensburg. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Paul G. McKelvey, Jr., MD; four children and their families, Jay (Cathy) McKelvey and son, Tim, and daughter, Rachel of South Euclid, Ohio; Roy (Rebecca) McKelvey and son, Max, and daughter, Dana, of Richmond, VA; David (Annette) McKelvey and daughters, Andrea and Lauren, and son, Keith, of Richmond, VA; and Scott (Linda) McKelvey and sons, Ryan and Kyle of Greensburg; a brother, Robert Barbour of Dana Point, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 7, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street, Greensburg, PA.
