Herman M.D.

July 26, 1942 — August 29, 2012

Herman Chmel MD, was born in Scranton, Pa. and was a graduate of the University of Scranton and Hahnemann Medical College in Phila, Pa.

He did his Internship and Residency in N.Y.C. followed by a Fellowship at memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Throughout his career he was the receipent of many awards and was included in such publications as Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the America, Who's Who in the World and Men of Achievement.

He was the author of more than 150 articles including abstracts, papers and chapters in textbooks.

Herman served as a board member of many professional journals and as a principal investigator on research studies and was also a lecturer and visiting professor.

He served 2 years as a Major in the Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed in Washington D.C. and received the U.S. Commendation Medal.

He practiced in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Washington, Pa. and retired as chair of Medicine from Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown.

When Herman was asked what he enjoyed most about his career he would always reply "teaching" (over 500 Interns and Residents).

Surviving are his wife Joyce Ruisi Chmel , son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Marissa Chmel, daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Ralph Brown, beloved grandsons Emilio and Marcello, sisters, Diane, and Elaine ,brother-in-Law, Roger Ruisi, niece's Sherri and Elana and nephew Max.

Family and friends will be received Saturday, September 01, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home, (an authorized remembrance provider) 524 North Main Street Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

A prayer service will be held in the Funeral Home beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

may be made to the Humane Society of Westmoreland County, PO Box 1552, Greensburg, Pa. 15601 .
