Joan Hebrank Smith
Joan Hebrank Smith, 87, of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Greensburg died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 in Riderwood Assisted Living, Silver Spring, MD. She was born on October 31, 1930 in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Joseph and Ann Thomas Hebrank.
Joan was a graduate of The Grier School, and Chatham College (formerly Pennsylvania College for Women). She valued her time at these institutions and always spoke of her friendships and academic experiences. Joan was an elementary school teacher in the Greensburg Salem School District. Joan enjoyed bridge, baking, sewing, knitting, long walks, and square dancing. She loved traveling with her husband – especially Elderhostel trips and cruises, playing with grandkids, learning new things, regularly attending plays and concerts and art shows at St. Clair Park, St. Vincent College, and Heinz Hall. She loved living in Greensburg and spending time with the neighbors and her family. Joan was a member of the Greensburg College Club and was a strong advocate for education. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Wayne Smith in 2007, her brother Thomas Hebrank, and nephew Michael Hebrank.
Joan is survived by her children, Ann Smith Stein (Daniel) of Silver Spring, MD, Jennifer Smith Sutton (John) of Essex Junction, VT and Joseph William Smith (Pamela) of Laurel, MD.; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, her sister Mary Jane Shrum (Paul) and sister-in-law Jacquelyn Hebrank, and four nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held for Joan on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 300 North Main Street, Greensburg. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church.
