Josephine Newman

d. January 1, 2021

Josephine Newman went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021 at the age of 95. She graduated from Greensburg Salem High School and was then employed at the Manos Theatre, where she sold tickets. She had many fond memories of that job and loved seeing the children. Later she was employed at Beneficial Finance and then Newman's Jewelry Store, where she was a gemologist, sales representative and buyer of fine diamonds. Josephine was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. She enjoyed ice skating, painting, card playing, spending time at Ligonier Valley Beach (where she taught her nieces to swim), and traveling to Atlantic City and Myrtle Beach. Josephine met her husband, Paul Newman, who worked in downtown Greensburg. He had returned from World War II and was a watchmaker at his family's jewelry store, Newman's on 2nd Street. Jo and Paul enjoyed traveling, boating, and playing golf (which she frequently won). After retiring, they became snowbirds, going to St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., for many years. She enjoyed walking the beach and collecting seashells, especially sand dollars. Family was very important to Josephine, and she was lovingly referred to as Peanut by her siblings. Entertaining was one of her favorite things to do along with her great cooking. Full of grace and class, she was always a lady, lovely on the inside and out. Her family has many warm memories of her kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity. In addition to her parents, Zefferino Scuri and Christina Scalabrini Scuri, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Newman; sister, Elda Scuri; and brothers, Leonard and Eli Scuri. Surviving are her sister, Marie Owens; nieces, Christine Pangallo and husband, Dominic, and Michelle Remaley and husband, Blaine; great-nieces and great-nephews, Lisa (Remaley) Hoffman and husband Eric, Steven Remaley and wife, Kailey, Philip Remaley and wife, Cara; and Mathew, Nathan, and Jonathan Lovre. Josephine was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, and great aunt to her family. We will miss her and look forward to the day when we see her beautiful smile and wonderful laugh again. We want to thank Bethlen Home Memory Care nurses and aides for their exceptional and wonderful care. They were her family during the time she was there. Josephine's services will be private. Interment will be in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery. KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME is entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bethlen Home Memory Care, 66 Carey School Road, Ligonier, PA 15658.
