Larry R. Shively, 65, of Jeannette (Hempfield Township), passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born February 14, 1947 in New Stanton, son of the late Glenn and Rosella (Henry) Shively.
Larry was Head Mechanic and active in the operations of Hillview Bowling Lanes in Greensburg after having worked as a self-employed contractor for 36 years. For 10 years, he was Head Coach of the Hempfield Area High School Spartans Bowling Team, leading the boys and girls teams to a combined 14 section titles, 8 conference titles, and 4 state championships. This spring, he is to be inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League Hall of Fame. He also bowled himself and was a member of the Hillview Metropolitan Bowling League. He was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also had FBI/White House clearance as Crew Chief aboard the Presidential helicopter and on the helicopter that flew Neil Armstrong and crew after the first moon landing. Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Spor.
Larry is survived by his wife, Karen S. (Marinelli) Shively; a son, Nathan Shively and his wife, Jaime; two sisters, Carol Seaman (Bob); Dorothy Marks; two brothers, Dale Shively (Evelyn) and Wayne Shively (Donna); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, INC 524 N. Main St. Greensburg(an Authorized Remembrance Provider). Addition visitation Friday from 10 until 11 am with funeral services beginning at 11 in the funeral home officiated by Rev. Samuel Scheiderer. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park with military honors bestowed by VFW Post 33. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hempfield Spartan Bowling Team Scholarship Fund 4347 Pennsylvania 136, Greensburg, Pa. 15601.
