Larry Leroy Songer, Sr.

Larry L. Songer, Sr., 81, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at his Greensburg home. He was born February 4, 1942 in Alcola, PA, a son of the late Ralph and Grace Reed Songer. As a young man, he worked as a skate boy at the nearby skating rink. He and his brothers performed and did tricks at other local rinks. After high school, he enlisted as a quartermaster in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea during the conflict. He also enjoyed being a stock car driver with his brothers. After marriage, he moved to Greensburg and accepted a job as carpenter working for his uncle. After that, he worked for Elliott Company in Jeannette for 32 years as a machinist. He was a faithful member, elder, worship leader, and Sunday School teacher at Hempfield Church of Christ. Larry enjoyed being around, giving hugs to, and joking with people. He did not know a stranger. He, along with his family, loved sharing God’s Word through song to churches and camps. Larry loved being with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Dwayne Reed, Jerry and Martin Songer, and Charlotte Orf. He was the last member of his immediate family. Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Jean Ramer Songer; his children, Christine “Chris” Lilley, Larry L. Songer, Jr., and Teresa Gourley; 6 grandchildren, Justin Lilley (Anna), Moriah Montgomery (Jeff), Noah Lilley (Camryn), Camryn Lilley, Dylan Gourley and Peyton Gourley (Shannon); 3 great grandchildren, Jade Montgomery, Ian Montgomery, Graham Lilley; also, several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank all those amazing healthcare providers who assisted in his care, especially Dr Cole, Dr Chahin, and Dr Agrawal. Family and friends will gather for Larry from 10 to 11 am on September 9, 2023 at Hempfield Church of Christ, 144 Hugh Black Road, Greensburg, PA 15601. Larry’s Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 am in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hempfield Church of Christ.
