Laura Detar

Laura Scott Detar died July 10, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She was born November 29, 1922 in Petersburg, Pennsylvania and grew up on a farm.  She considered it a great advantage in life to be raised on a farm where she learned to be frugal and self-sufficient.  She attended school in Petersburg, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class in 1940.  She entered Juniata College where she graduated in three years with degrees in History, Math and English.  She taught school in Millersburg, Pennsylvania for three years during World War II.  In 1946 she married George W. Detar, Jr. and moved to Greensburg, Pennsylvania where she lived for the next 66 years.  She served in various leadership roles in the Greensburg Church of the Brethren and held elected offices in the Western Pennsylvania District of the Church of the Brethren.  Later she was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Greensburg where she and her husband coached the Youth Bible Bowl Teams.  She was a Hundred Hour Volunteer at Westmoreland Manor and she read store ads for broadcast to the blind.  She was a true fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams  and during her last weeks was still celebrating the Stanley Cup victory. She loved gardening, traveling, reading, and puzzles.  Most of all she loved her family and kept in touch by phone when she moved to Philadelphia after the death of her husband of 64 years.  She was preceded in death by her parents John W. and Mary Cresswell Scott and her brothers James Harvey and John William Scott.  She is survived by her children:  Susan (Walter) Dziuk, Diane (David) Scott, Carol (Randall) Jones, and George W.(Sharon)  Detar  III; her grandchildren:  Adina (Matthew) Bingham, Simon (Emily Lincoln) Detar, Amy (Michael) Haas, Laurel (Samuel) Books, Kellen (Anna) Detar, Megan (Brian) Day, Ian Jones, Bayley Detar and Emily Jones; and her great grandchildren: Madeleine, Noah, Tristan, Liam, Rhys, Eli, and Metta.
Family and friends will be received on Friday from 5-8pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home 524 N. Main Street, Greensburg.
Additional visitation will be held in the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30-10:30am.
Services will be held on Saturday at 11am at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church 246 S. Main Street, Greensburg.
Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
