Lawrence Sphon

July 14, 1933 — June 27, 2012

Lawrence H. "BOOTS" Sphon, 78 of Bovard, died at home on June 27, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He was born July 14, 1933 in Hempfield Township, the son of the late Henry "Red" and Catherine Parfitt Sphon.

He graduated from Greensburg Senior High School in the class of 1953 and is a retired employee of USX Steel Homestead as well as from the University of Seton Hill Security Department. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War 1953-1955. Along with working in his yard, home, and garage, his hobbies included his love for boating, fishing, and hunting with friends and his grandchildren as they were growing up. He was a social member of the Bovard Fire Hall and Lutheran by Faith.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Grace Schmidt Sphon of 58 years, his children include: two daughters, Becky Martello (Dennis) of Bovard, and Leslie Bartosh (Daniel) of Greensburg; one son, Lawrence H. Sphon, Jr. (Carol) of Bovard. He had six grandchildren, Mindy Bartosh and friend, Ted, Daniel Bartosh II and fiancAC.e Danielle, Rachael and Albert Sphon, and David and Jeremy DeLong. Additionally;he enjoyed two great grandchildren, Alex and Amber Brooks. Lawrence has two brothers: Charles Sphon (Luella) of Lincoln, Nebraska and Elmer Sphon and friend Kay of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; as well as two sisters, Eleanor Scherer of Greensburg and Victoria Carper of Cardiff, CA. Friend and neighbor, Ed DeLong who has been a great help. (Thanks!) He was blessed with a wonderful family of nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sister-in-laws: Helen Sphon from Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, Alice Sphon of Lincoln, Nebraska and one brother-in-law, Donald Scherer from Greensburg.

Family and friends will be received on Friday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home (an authorized remembrance provider) 524 North Main Street, Greensburg. Service will be held in the funeral home at 10am on Saturday with Deacon Tom Hohn officiating. Entombment will be held in the Westmoreland Memorial Park .
