Mary Herrington

February 11, 1925 — January 9, 2013

Mary Byers Herrington (Mrs. Edgar Paul Herrington Jr.) died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in her sleep at her home in Williamsburg, Va. A lifelong resident of Greensburg, Mrs. Herrington moved to Williamsburg with her husband in June 2012. Mrs. Herrington was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Greensburg, to Mary and H.A. Byers. Her father was a Greensburg businessman who owned the Greensburg Chrysler Plymouth dealership for almost four decades. Mrs. Herrington, who was the second of three Byers sisters, was called "Sister" by her family and widely known as "Sis" all her life. Mrs. Herrington, a proud member of the class of 1942, always looked back fondly on her years at Greensburg High School. She stayed in touch with her many friends of the class of '42 for the rest of her life and enjoyed her work as an organizer of their regular high school reunions. Mrs. Herrington went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1948 where she majored in history and loved being part of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. While at Pitt, she met the love of her life, Ted Herrington, who had recently returned as a World War II veteran. They were married at the First Methodist Church in Greensburg in 1949 and settled on Corcord Avenue in Greensburg. Mr. Herrington continued his studies at Pitt graduating from the law school in 1952. Mrs. Herrington's life was anchored by her love of family, her love of her many dear friends, her love of Greensburg, her love of gardening and her love of sports. Mrs. Herrington was active in Greensburg civic activities all her life. She was a lifelong member of the Westmoreland Garden Club serving twice as its president. She took a personal interest in the summer flowers at Lynch Field, watering the plantings herself late into her seventies. She was a dedicated supporter and board member of the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, a volunteer for more than 20 years in the Hospitality Shop at the Westmoreland Hospital, a lifelong member of College Club and the Westmoreland Historical Society. Mrs. Herrington was an enthusiastic sportswoman all her life with a particular passion for golf. Among her happiest days were the many summer mornings she spent playing golf with her husband at the Pike Run Country Club. Mrs. Herrington's greatest delight was time spent with her family, Ted Herrington, her husband of 63 years; and her three children and their spouses, Heidi Herrington Debevoise and her husband, Whitney Debevoise, Edgar Paul Herrington III and his wife, Alice Herrington, and Mary Herrington Kefalas and her husband, Arthur Kefalas. Mrs. Herrington was particularly close to her grandchildren, Hadley Herrington Debevoise, Elizabeth Whitney Debevoise Baxter and husband Edward, The Reverend Edgar Paul Herrington IV, Christopher Herrington Kefalas and Kevin Byers Kefalas. Mrs. Herrington is also survived by her loving sisters, Linda Feightner and Peggy Lockard and their families. Mrs. Herrington was always grateful for the blessings in her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends for her sense of humor, her warmth and her enthusiasm for life which touched all who knew her. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service to celebrate Mary's life at 11 a.m. Monday in the First United Methodist Church , 15 E. Second St., Greensburg. There will be no visitation for the public at the funeral home and private interment will be held in the St. Clair Cemetery. KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME OF GREENSBURG entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, 237 South Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601.
