Mary F. Pomerleau, beloved mother of seven children, a teacher, artist and author, died peacefully, surrounded by members of her family in Jeannette, PA on June 25, 2012. Mary was 88 years old.

Mary taught English and history for 25 years in the North Allegheny High School district of suburban Pittsburgh, PA. Mary taught at both the junior and senior high school levels beginning in 1963. In 1967, Mary earned a Master of Arts degree In English literature from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She received an undergraduate degree from Emmanuel College in Boston in 1944.

Following the death of her husband in 1963, Mary brought up her seven children with the loving assistance of her mother Clara. Mary encouraged each of her children to discover their unique talents. All of her children graduated from college and several of them completed graduate degrees.

Mary and her husband, Daniel Louis Pomerleau (deceased 1963), had seven children, Suzanne (deceased), Daniel, Mark, Clare, Paul, John and Robert. They made their home in Pittsburgh, PA. Mary had fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mary was born July 16, 1923, the daughter of John Fred and Clara Boyle Farrell of Boston, MA. She was the granddaughter of Elizabeth and Michael Fergus Farrell. Michael, a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, served as a Justice of the Somerville District Superior Court, MA.

Upon retirement, Mary moved to Kettering, Ohio, to be near several of her children. She attended adult classes at the University of Dayton and traveled in the United States and Europe. She enjoyed writing, publishing a translation from the Middle English of poet Geoffrey Chaucer's work, The Parson's Tale. Mary's work is now used as a text book. Mary pursued her love of painting, completing more than eighty works, including seascapes, lighthouses and landscapes. Mary enjoyed camping with her children in Massachusetts and Maine near the ocean.

Her grown children, though separated by geography, remained close to Mary and each other. Her oldest daughter, Suzanne, retired as a librarian and moved to live with Mary in Ohio. Suzanne died in 2009.

A devout Roman Catholic, Mary attended Mass at St. Vincent's Basilica Parish, a Benedictine abbey in Latrobe, PA, for the last several years while she was living with her son, Paul, his wife Teri and their family in the Greensburg, PA area. Mary was a Benedictine oblate, taking the name Scholastica, for more than sixty years, integrating prayer, faith and work in her daily life.

While living in Ohio, Mary was a member of St. Albert the Great parish in Kettering and Emmanuel Catholic church in Dayton. While raising her family in the Pittsburgh area, Mary was a member of St. James Parish in Sewickley, and St. Alphonsus parish in Wexford. Mary is also survived by an older brother, John F. Farrell (Br. Leonard Mary, MICM), St. Benedict Center West, in Arcadia, CA.

Mary's husband, Daniel, was a graduate of The College of The Holy Cross in Worchester, MA and attended graduate business management program at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Daniel was the son of Louis and Leona (Mouton) Pomerleau. Daniel was died at the age of 43 in 1963. He was a controller at United States Steel Corporation.

Mary's children include: Suzanne (d 2009), Daniel, (Fair Haven, NJ), Mark (Yarmouth, ME), Clare (Ridgefield, CT), Paul (Jeannette, PA), John (West Chester, OH), and Robert (Baden, PA). Mary had 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.



Friends will be received on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, Inc. 524 North Main Street, Greensburg, PA. A Catholic funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 29 at 10 am in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe, PA. (Everyone please go directly to St. Vincents) Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the North Side Catholic Cemetery (Christ Our Reedeemer Cemetery) 204 Cemetery Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
