Mildred Bailey

August 8, 1924 — May 9, 2012

Mildred M. Bailey, 87, of Greensburg, died in the evening of May 9,

2012 at Westmoreland Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Lansford PA, on August 8, 1924, the daughter of the

late Peter and Mary (Gaydos) Maholick.

Following her graduation from high school, and certification from

business school, Mildred attended the University of Maryland School of

Nursing in Baltimore from which she graduated in 1942. With her

first marriage to Bill Booher, she was an enduring presence at the

Swimming Pool and the Antique Shows and other Hotel functions. She

enjoyed her Mountain View Bridge Club (the "Ridgey Bridgers"). When

the Ridgey Bridgers gathered, all the neighborhood kids knew somebody

was "gonna get it!" But Mildred raised her children with a fairly high

degree of tolerance for their childhood escapades. Her love of

playing bridge with her friends grew and expanded, and continued even

as all the players grew older.

Mildred became involved with the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary, and

served as President of the Southwest Region of the PA Association of

Healthcare Auxiliaries in 1973-1974. Her deep commitment to the

organization showed in her frequent trips to gift shows where she

served as chief buyer for the Hospitality Shop; was Chairperson of the

"Century of Service" for the Auxiliary's centennial celebration;

Director of Volunteers for the Auxiliary; organizing statewide

conferences; and fundraising activities.

Mildred was also an avid supporter of the Greensburg Garden Club, the

Westmoreland Museum, and Westmoreland Symphony. She was a long-term

member of the First Presbyterian Church, and actively supported many

of the services and functions offered by the Church. In recent years

she enjoyed attending the Summer Concerts in St. Clair Park with her

friends, as well as monthly gatherings to celebrate the "Birthday

Girls."

Over the years following her marriage to beloved local dentist,

Dr. J. William "Bill" Bailey, she developed a somewhat begrudging

enjoyment of fishing, as they vacationed at Bill's favorite fishing

camp, "Yankanuck", on the Georgian Bay in Canada. She thought it

quite rustic, but truly enjoyed the camaraderie of new friends, and

the beauty of the islands and the Bay. And she even caught fish,

although Bill had to bait the hook. (Yes, we do have pictures!)

In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her

husband of 33 years, Dr. J. William (Bill) Bailey, and her brother Dr.

Leonard T. Maholick of GA. She is survived by the children of her

first husband, son Vance Booher III and his wife Vicki of Greensburg,

and daughter Rebecca Booher of Hendersonville NC; one sister, Terri

Stephens of LaHabra CA; grandchildren Douglas, Jonathan, and Erik

Booher of Greensburg; numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws!

Beloved Mother, Sister, Grandma, Aunt, Friend; a "great lady";

"wonderful hostess"; and "the cookie lady." She will be greatly

missed by many.
