Mildred Ann Elias, a rare and dignified woman who graced the life of Greensburg for decades, passed on to her beloved Lord on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. During her life as such a unique and beautiful woman, often sighted walking up and down the hills of Greensburg daily, Mildred Ann Elias, wife of the late Michael Elias, mother of Cheryl Ann, grandmother of Michael W. Nusbaum and great-grandmother of Doris Jeanne Nusbaum, Mildred was faithful to God, to her spiritual home, Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, and to her community. At the Cathedral she inspired the congregants when she read from the gospels in her role as a lector. She also devoted her talents as financial secretary for the Cathedral's branch of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and as secretary of the church council. Greensburg's cultural life was enriched by her contributions as both on and off stage to the Greensburg Civic Theatre and the Greensburg Area Cultural Council. In 2007, Mildred received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cultural Council where she "ran the office, organized and documented its many meetings, did the payroll and taxes, sold tickets, helped organize all the Grand Finales and banquets and so much more. Where would we have been without you? You were our glue. Always you have carried yourself with grace and style, befitting the beautiful lady that you are." So wrote GACC past president, Scott Brown, on the occasion that year of her award. In 1993, Mildred received the Vera Award for her "dedicated volunteer service to the Westmoreland Choral Society." Her grandson, Michael, will always remember her devotion to her faith, her family and for stretching a dollar, one of the lessons she learned during the Great Depression. He was impressed, as were others who knew her personally, with the discipline that kept her ageless, plus the fact that she never lost interest in the world, especially politics, classic movies and Steelers football. Beautiful, articulate, poised, determined, proud, courageous, gifted, kind, sensitive, accomplished and strong, Mildred Ann Elias was a rare breed of woman who was loved and will be missed. She is survived by her daughter, grandson and great-granddaughter. As per family wishes, there will be no public visitation. Prayers of transfer will be offered at 9 a.m. Friday at KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, followed by her funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg. Interment will be held in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name, made to St. Jude's Hospital in Tennessee, would be appreciated.
