Paul G. McKelvey Jr., 89, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2014. He was born to the late Paul G. and Marjorie (Barron) McKelvey of Greensburg on March 1, 1925, and was the oldest of three children.
He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1948 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1953. On July 26th, 1952, he married Helen
Ruth Barbour, also of Greensburg. After his residency in Philadelphia, he returned to Greensburg to join his father's practice as a General Practitioner.
Paul also served in the military during the Second World War as a member of the 159th Engineer Combat Battalion which played a prominent role in the Battle of
the Bulge. For his service in the war he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European American Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. Paul served the Greensburg community as a family physician maintaining a private practice for 25 years. He then joined the staff of Latrobe Area Hospital as a teaching faculty in their Family Medicine Residency program in which he trained recent medical school graduates in the nuances of running a successful family practice. He retired from this position after 10 years. He also served as plant physician for the ITE Corporation for 25 years; as team physician for the Greensburg Salem High School football team for 13 years; and on the staff of Westmoreland Manor for 13 years. In his private life Paul was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and contract bridge player. He was also a member of the Elks, the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, the American Order of the French Croix de Guerre, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was proud of donating 96 pints of blood to the American Red Cross. Paul loved to travel (economically!) and was the proud owner of an idyllic cottage in Combermere, Ontario, where he spent many days in the company of his family, friends and people of the local community. In this setting, at nightly card games, he tolerated as best he could the illogical trump play of his children, their wives and grand children.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend, Helen, his brother, John McKelvey of Charlotte, North Carolina, and sister, Priscilla McKelvey Grayson of Dayton, Ohio. He is survived by his four sons and their families, Jay (Cathy) McKelvey and son, Tim, and daughter, Rachel of South Euclid, Ohio; Roy (Rebecca) McKelvey and son, Max, and daughter, Dana, of Richmond, Virginia; David (Annette) McKelvey and daughters, Andrea and Lauren, and son, Keith, of Richmond, Virginia; and Scott (Linda) McKelvey and sons, Ryan and Kyle of Greensburg; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3 to 7pm at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street, Greensburg, PA.
A short service will immediately follow visitation hours with Rev. Martin Ankrum officiating
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the USO in support of our nation's troops.
