Following an extended and bravely-fought battle with complex health issues, Raymond H. Spoonhoward (Ray) died on July 11, 2024 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born on July 16, 1943 and would have turned 81 this year. Ray was the son of the late James B. Spoonhoward and Carolyn (Baer) and following Carolyn’s death, the step-son of Lillian A. Spoonhoward. Along with his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother James B. Spoonhoward Jr, and wife Carol Spoonhoward, mother in-law and father in-law Edith and Russell Stares, and brother-in-law and sister-in law Mischa and Betty Stares. Surviving Ray are his caring and loving wife of 58 years, Mary; brothers William C. Spoonhoward and wife Tamara, Dennis L. Spoonhoward and wife Karen; honorary brother James Kelly and wife Patricia; his beloved dog Kenzie and many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews. Ray received a B.A. and Masters Degree in Education from California University of Pennsylvania and taught for 38 years at West Hempfield Jr. High/Middle School. Ray was a member of the Charter Oak Church, Gabonay’s Golf Group (where he was given the name “Ranger Ray” when he could no longer play), the Spare Change Bowling League, and the W.H. Breakfast Club. He also enjoyed hunting, playing cards, watching Steeler games, and participating in Super Bowl parties and Holiday parties. “God saw that a full recovery was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered ‘Come to Me”. Ray’s family thanks all who supported Ray and Mary through his many health issues with PRAYERS, beautiful cards, phone calls, text messages, rides, and food. A memorial service will be held on July 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Charter Oak Church.
