Sally Marker Hayward of Greensburg, PA died on Saturday, December 30, 2023, aged 86 years.
Sally was born January 3, 1937, in Whitinsville, MA, daughter of Roscoe “Mike” and Evelyn “Tillie” Marker.
She was a graduate of Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, where she was a champion swimmer, and Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College) in New London, NH.
Sally was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Donald Barnes Hayward, her parents, and infant son, Dan Barnes Hayward. She is survived by her three children, David Marker Hayward of Rockport, TX, Susan Kimball Hayward Koshewa of Aiken, SC, and Sarah Gilbert Hayward Lynch and husband, James, of Alta Loma, CA; two granddaughters, Molly Averell Koshewa of Farmers Branch, TX, and Lucy Hayward Koshewa and husband, Scott Glen, of Seattle, WA; her sister, Elizabeth King Marker, PhD, of Portland, OR; and several beloved cousins. Sally never met a stranger, and she leaves behind a large circle of friends whom she loved like family.
Sally and Don moved to western Pennsylvania in 1958 when he began his 38-year career with West Penn Power. After settling in Greensburg in 1967, they joined Trinity United Church of Christ and over the years she served as a Deacon, Elder, and Sunday School teacher, and she sang with the church choir. She was a member of several other church ministries, including being a delegate to General Synods XIV and XV of the United Church of Christ. Sally volunteered with the Westmoreland County Girl Scout Council and Unit 14 of the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary. She was the longest active member of the Tuesday Literary Club of Greensburg and attended Bible Group at St. Bruno Church. Sally was a voracious reader and worked for a time at B. Dalton Booksellers to support her book habit. She solved crosswords with pen in hand rather than pencil, and loved all kinds of games and puzzles, playing bridge well into her eighties. Sally delighted in sending greeting cards to family and friends, both near and far. After traveling widely with Don and friends in retirement, she enjoyed many a nap with a cat on her lap.
