Thomas E. "Tom" Sphon, 53, of Southwest Greensburg, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, after more than a five-year battle with frontotemporal dementia. He was born March 16, 1961, a son of John J. "Ike" Sphon and the late Catherine "Rena" Borgna Sphon.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Greensburg. Tom was a graduate of Greensburg Salem High School in 1979, where he was a member of the football, baseball and swim teams, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1983. He was the athletic director for Greensburg Salem School District from 2004 to 2010, city administrator for the city of Greensburg from 1996 to 2004 and was the superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the city of Greensburg from 1988 to 1996. Tom enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, football and golf. He was the defensive back/wide receiver coach at Greensburg Salem High School from 1990 to 1994, and offensive coordinator in 1995. He also enjoyed coaching baseball at various levels. Tom was passionately devoted to his sons, family and community.
In addition to his father, Tom is survived by his sons, Taylor C. Sphon, of Bethesda, Md., and his fiancee, Kaitlyn J. Blasy, of Philadelphia, and Nathaniel J. "Nate" Sphon, of Pittsburgh; brothers, John M. Sphon and wife, Donna, of Greensburg, and James J. Sphon, of Southwest Greensburg; nephew, Lucas B. Sphon, of Greensburg; uncles, Stephen E. "Bud" Sphon, of Bovard, and Richard J. Sphon and his wife, Judy, of Painted Post, N.Y.; and special cousins, Ann Nicholson (Barry), of Painted Post, N.Y., Susan Hoobler (Ray), of Horseheads, N.Y., and Jennifer Corbey (Brian), of Charlottesville, Va.
There will be no public visitation and all services will be private.
