Thomas Daniel Stempkowski

Thomas Daniel Stempkowski, 91, of Greensburg, PA died Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg in hospice care. He was born September 7, 1933 to Antoni and Magdalena (Gembarowski) Stempkowski in McKees Rocks, PA as the youngest of 10 children. Tom is survived by his wife Ellen (Macosko), sons Tony (Renee) and Brad, granddaughters Laila, Lexie, and Bridget, sisters-in-law Beatrice and Josephine, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Helen (Weinhofer), Sophie (Stortecky), Casimir, Stanley, Edmund, Joseph, Stephen, Eugene, and Bernard. Tom graduated from McKees Rocks High School in 1951 and attended the University of Pittsburgh for two years before joining the Army. He served as a cook in the Army for two years, where he developed his interest in food service. After serving in the Army, he attended Penn State where he married Ellen in 1958 and obtained his B.S. in Hotel Management. Tom worked at many different institutions during his career as a food service director and regional manager, including Penn State, Seton Hall University, Sarah Lawrence College, Pace University, Pratt Institute, University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, Harrisburg Hospital, John J. Kane Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital, Monsour Medical Center, and Vincentian Home. Tom was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid swimmer and swam up to a mile four to five days a week at the YMCA or Aerobic Center until age 90. Tom was always for the underdog, and throughout his life tried to help as many people as possible. After retiring at age 80, he enjoyed volunteering at the St. Vincent DePaul thrift store in Greensburg. Continuing to help others after his death, Tom donated his body to Pitt Medical School through the Humanity Gift Registry. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the ALS Association or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home entrusted with the arrangements.
