Great sadness amongst his many family members, friends, colleagues and clients, met the announcement that well-known local attorney, Timothy J. McCormick, passed away on Sunday June 17, in Charleston, SC, after a 2 year battle against leukemia and other health related complications. He had recently changed residence to Pawleys Island, SC after spending his entire life, along with wife Linda (formerly Markle), in Greensburg, PA.
Tim was born May 14, 1953, in Greensburg, PA, the second son of Beatrice and Richard E. McCormick, and one of eight children. He attended local schools, Cathedral and Greensburg Central Catholic HS, before receiving his BA & Law degrees from Penn State & the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father and developed a broad legal practice focusing on criminal defense. Tim's 33 year career began when he was admitted to the Bar in Pennsylvania in 1979 and started working in the Westmoreland Co. Public Defenders Office under the direction of Attorney Danny Bertani - whom Tim often cited as his colleague, friend and main legal mentor. Tim was admitted to all of the courts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Federal Court for the Western Court of Pennsylvania, the Federal 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States. He was a member of the prominent Greensburg law firm, Stewart, McCormick, McArdle & Sorice from 1981 until 2002, before establishing his solo legal practice. He was Solicitor for the City of Greensburg from 1992 until this year, and was also a member of The Westmoreland County Academy of Trial Lawyers. Tim served as the President of the SPHS Behavioral Health Care Board of Directors, recently retiring after 22 years.
A longtime member of the Democratic Party, Tim was well known as an advocate/activist for the values and issues of importance to the organization. The McCormick family association and influence with Democratic politics in the county extended back to the early 1900's (sometimes being humorously referred to as "the Kennedys of GBG", by both friends and political foes). He ran for the offices of Westmoreland Co. District Attorney as well as a seat on the Pennsylvania Superior Court. He maintained a position of great influence in party matters; and his support was often sought by others running for local, state and national offices. He served on former PA Governor Edward Rendell's Transition Team in 2003, was a delegate to several Democratic National Conventions and was often contacted by the National Democratic Presidential campaigns for his support in organizing local efforts.
Tim was predeceased by his parents, Beatrice and Hon. Richard E. McCormick, his oldest sister, Kate and his fondly missed Irish terrier, Ruby.
He is immediately survived by his Wife of 31 years and his greatest champion, caregiver and loving companion, Linda (Markle) McCormick; son David McCormick; daughters Meghan (Mike) Denny and Emily (Samir) Saba, mother & father-in-law Margaret and Gilbert Markle, as well as his devoted canine companion, Max.
His acerbic wit and strong presence will also be missed by surviving sisters Mary, Sheila and Joan along with brothers Richard, Patrick, and Jake as well as the many nieces & nephews who'll remember their uncle fondly. Tim's hundreds of extended family members, friends & associates are too numerous to mention here; but all had important places in the personal fabric of his life.
The words of one of Tim's favorite musician/songwriters, Jackson Browne, keynote his significant life lived in the service & love of others:
"Docter, my eyes have seen the years ... . And the slow parade of fears without crying ... . Now I want to understand ... . I have done ALL that I COULD ... . To see the evil and the good ... . without hiding"
Tim ... . You'll never, ever be "hidden" in the lives of those you've left behind. Please keep "your eyes" on us.
A memorial service will be held this Saturday June 23, beginning 11am, at Seton Hill University's Performing Arts Center, 100 Harrison Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601
