William C. Dickie, 92, of Greensburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, December 1st, 2012 at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg.
Bill was born in Blairsville on June 30th, 1920, to William N. Dickie and Rosalind Caldwell Dickie. He married the former Mary Elizabeth (Sue) Gilmore on May 9th, 1942. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh. Upon graduation he was inducted into the Army Medical Corps and spent two and a half years in Europe during World War II. During that time he was able to visit his ancestral home in Ballybagorra in Northern Ireland and visit family relatives in Belfast. After discharge he joined Parke, Davis and Co. and spent the next thirty-eight years in various assignments in the sales department covering western Pennsylvania and upstate New York. He and Sue moved to Greensburg in 1972 and retired in 1985. Bill was a member and Deacon of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, a member of Hannastown Golf Club, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. He was a past president of the Greensburg Kiwanis Club, a Fellow in the George F. Hutchison Fellowship of the Kiwanis International Foundation and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 355 of Blairsville. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jean Dickie Markiewicz of Latrobe. Bill is survived by his best friend and wife, Sue; his four children: son William G. Dickie of Dallas and his wife, Barbara (Stratton); his daughters Janice Craft and Joanne Thompson, both of Lake Worth, FL; son Thomas E. Dickie of Ft. Lauderdale, eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister Nancy Dickie Artley of Lutherville, MD; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was PopPop not only to his own grandchildren, but PopPop to many of their friends. His favorite times were the yearly family reunions in Baltimore where he could visit with all the generations and...eat crabs! He was an avid golfer from the time he was old enough to dig holes in his backyard and call them a miniature golf course until he reached the age when his knees and elbows would not let him swing a club. He was a wonderful photographer and artist as were his parents and sisters; that talent continues in his grandchildren and theirs. We will miss him.
A memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1120 Harvey Ave, Greensburg on Thursday, December 6th at 11:00 am.
