William G. Hillis, 85, of Greensburg, died, Thursday, February 25, 2021 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital. He was born December 8, 1935 in Hempfield Township a son of the late Preston Glenn and Helen (Deemer) Hillis.
Bill retired from the former Bell Telephone Company in the central office where he worked as a switching equipment technician. He was an active and faithful member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He was a member of the Westmoreland County Historical Society and the Armbrust Veteran’s Association participating in providing military funeral honors. Bill was a veteran of the US Army and a graduate of Greensburg High School class of 1953. He also attended Carnegie Institute of Technology. In his spare time Bill was known for making apple cider on the press which his grandfather used. He also enjoyed making homemade ice cream.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara (Cope) Hillis; his three children, William L. Hillis (Martha); Carrie (Hillis) Morchesky (Richard) and Debbie Fandel (Jeff); eight grandchildren, William G. Hillis (Amy), Cheryl Sisk (Christopher), Melissa Redd (Josh), Robert Hillis, Michelle Damiano (Anthony), Richard J. Morchesky, Brandon Fandel and Nicole Fandel; eleven great-grandchildren; his siblings, Nancy Jordan, Ruth Hite (William), Carol Rossi, James Hillis, and Jean Hippler, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 1 to 4 pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, INC 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. Private services will be held for the immediate family with Pastor Brian B. Chaffee officiating. The service will be available via livestream on Monday at 10:30 am by visiting Bill’s obituary page at www.kepplegraft.com. Visitors are asked to wear face masks and practice social distancing. The family will announce a public memorial service to be held in the summer at Zion’s Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion’s Lutheran Church 140 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601 or to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
