David Mitchell Toney, MD, of Greensburg, died Friday, January 29, 2016, at his home. He was born on March 3, 1938 in New Kensington, a son of the late Samuel and Catherine Nader Toney. Dave was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College before earning his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts serving in Vietnam as a Naval Lieutenant. Dr. Toney was an extraordinary radiologist at Westmoreland Hospital for 28 years. He was a longtime member of the Greensburg and Pike Run Country Clubs. A loving father, he doted on his twin daughters. He was a voracious reader and remembered everything. As a result, he was a brilliant conversationalist and impossible adversary in any argument. His curiosity was unbounded and he was always trying new things. Two of his many passions were cooking and flyfishing. He climbed mountains, loved opera and bicycled in France. He truly was a renaissance man. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mitchell Samuel Toney. Dr. Toney is survived by his daughters, Meredith Kaye “Merrie” O’Donnell (Edward) of Elko, NV and Melissa Dawn “Missy” Toney of NY, NY; grandsons, Bryce Edward O’Donnell and Charles David O’Donnell; nephew, Shawn Toney; also, his former wife, Sarah Dennis Eldridge (Robert) of Fox Chapel. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday at Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street, Greensburg beginning at Noon and concluding with U.S. Navy Military Honors at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, 221 North Main Street, Greensburg, PA 15601 or to a favorite charity.
